April has been an eventful and impactful month for the Metal Treating Institute (MTI), focusing on pivotal issues like decarbonization, air quality, and aerospace technical specifications—each significantly influencing the heat treating industry.
On April 3rd, MTI held a regional meeting in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, convening prominent heat treaters and suppliers from the Midwest to explore the latest developments in rules be pushed in air quality and decarbonization, and discuss forthcoming regulatory challenges.
Presentations highlighted potential new rules which could substantially raise energy costs, mandate enclosed facilities for all heat treating operations, require costly air quality tests exceeding $25,000+, and generally increase operational expenses.
Active in shaping these discussions are MTI Members Michael Mouilleseax from Erie Steel and Heather Falcone from Thermal-Vac Technology, who serve on MTI's newly formed Regulatory Impact Task Force. This group plays a crucial role in representing MTI Members in regulatory discussions, particularly in supporting the California Metals Coalition, a key advocate in California's regulatory arena. James Simonelli, Executive Director of the Coalition, emphasized the national implications of California's air quality regulations, likely to influence federal policies through the EPA.

On the technical standards front, the AMEC Committee led by MTI Member Roy Adkins of Braddock Metallurgical and includes 20+ MTI Member companies, met on April 17-18 in Huron, Ohio. They reviewed heat treating specifications including 2759, 2750, ARP 1962, and 2770, which are crucial for Nadcap audits.
